Another Orange Guy by lisaluera Another Orange Guy by lisaluera
November 2007

- Wheel thrown white stoneware
- Applied horse hair to the pot while it was hot to get the black lines. Then sprayed with ferric chloride to get the color.

is ferric chloride one of those scary chemicals?

Yep, it is definitely a scary chemical. You have to be really careful with it.

love what you did with the horsehair; it turned out quite well, I think. I was always a bit wary of using it, because it always seems to smell terrible.

The smell doesn't last long. It doesn't really bother me.

Wow, I learned something from your comment! I always thought onyx was black. I had to google it after I read your comment. You're right... it does look like the amber/orange colored onyx. cool... thanks for the observation.

So, so good.
Love the horsehair work and the colour.

Although I wonder, you must have lots of bald horses around your way! :D

haha! A little bit of hair goes a long way! When I started wanting to try to work with horsehair it was an interesting adventure to try to find some. Then my mother-in-law found out I was looking for it. She has a friend with horses. Turns out the friend was just about to groom her horses and was frustrated that her dogs had been nipping at the horses' tails and making them ragged. So she cut off two entire tails worth of hair and gave them to me. I should have enough horse hair to last me several years!

You have a point! So should I call my pots green now because I "recycle"? LOL let's not count the tons of propane I use, etc., etc.
