- Wheel Thrown White Stoneware
- Matte Raku Glaze on the bottom
- White Crackle Raku Glaze on the top
- Masked with pinstriping tape before glazing. The smoke turned the unglazed area black
This was a fun experiment. I really wanted a contrast between the dark raku glaze and the white crackle. However I wasn't sure how to get the crackle to work and still get good colors out of the matte glaze. I decided to have a friend spray canned air at the white area when I pulled the pot from the kiln. I told her to try her best not to cool down the bottom half too much. One note - don't invert canned air and spray at an 1800 degree pot. (think aerosol hairspray and blow torch) At least we were all wearing protective clothing, gloves, etc. etc. It was a little exciting there for a second! So, the white didn't really crackle much - I've yet to have success with white crackle. However, it did something really interesting. It got large dimples all over it similar to the surface of a golf ball, and the dimples turned silver! Tough to see in the photograph, but it looks really cool in person.
HI LIsa, I love this raku! we are looking or a vase to use as an urn for my grandparents ashes , I love your work do you have website and prices and sizes? can you get in touch with me? solticestudio@gmail.com
I'm sorry I just now saw your comment. I'm not on deviantArt as much as I used to be. I have 2 young children and, unfortunately, have not had time to make any pottery since before I was pregnant with my youngest (back in 2010). I'm planning on getting my studio going again soon but I'm definitely not at a point where I could do a commission for you. My condolences for your grandparents.
Yes, the top portion is a white crackle raku glaze. When you pull it out of the raku kiln you let it get exposed to the air for a few seconds so the glaze will start to crack, then you put it in the can to make all the cracks turn black. I always use newspaper in my cans.
Is there an actual glaze on the top portion? This came out amazing! What did you put in the can after you pulled from the kiln? (ie. newspaper, woodchips?)
