Tulp Vase, March 2007

This was fired during my workshop with Linda and Charlie Riggs.

- Wheel thrown, carved, and altered
- Laguna B-mix 10
- Bisque fired to Cone 08
- Polished with Terra Sigilata
- Fired in a foil saggar with ferric chloride and sugar (we call these baked potato pots because they look like baked potatoes wrapped in foil in the kiln)
- No glaze

Approximately 7 in h x 5 in w x 3 in d (I will measure it this evening)

I call this the tulip vase because it looked somewhat like an abstract tulip after I carved it. The colors don't look quite like a tulip anymore, but I still see the inner tulip inside! Tulips have been coming up in my work lately. I love flowers!

Very nice piece. Ferric chloride and sugar...what effect do you get by adding the sugar? Photo looks great...nice fade. :D

Thanks!

The ferric is what made the color. It turns yellow, red, pink, purple, or white depending on how hot it gets in the foil. The sugar adds the little dots that you see. The color of the sugar also depends on how hot it gets. Lower temps it stays black, when it gets hotter, it starts to make white dots. Crumpling the foil also makes the heat uneven and causes cool color differences in the ferric.

that came out really cool. I am going to be trying out terra sigilata in a couple of weeks. it is a great technique. i like this pice so much that i may try it out on a crab sculpture.

Thank you so much! Terra Sig is what gave this piece it's satin sheen, and makes it feel awesome to the touch (which you really don't get from the photograph unfortunately). I used a plain terra sig so it just gave a nice bright white canvas for the ferric chloride. I would love to see how your experiments with Terra Sig turn out! I'm somewhat new to using it myself and am in love with it!

there is a woman at our studio that uses it a lot. i really like the satin sheen as well. most of her pices look like marble when they are done. i really like the earthy "distressed" or "aged" look of your pice here and i think the smoothness comes across in the pic. there is another person at the studio using ferric chloride and i really like they way that comes out on just the naked clay body. i hope i get something worth posting. thanks for the ideas and the specifics in your post. if you like any thing of mine and i am not specific enough on the details just ask me :D

I love the opening and the curves. Interesting firing results. I'll bet the possibilities are endless.

Thank you! I love curvy stuff! This type of firing is awesome. It's kind of like raku where it is really random and you don't know what you are going to get, but it always turns out cool. I'll be doing some of these firings during my marathon this weekend.
