Turbulence - September 2007

- Wheel thrown
- Laguna B-mix 10
- Burnished while bone dry with terra sigilata
- Fired in a foil saggar [link] with ferric chloride, sugar, horse hair, and spanish moss.
- No glaze

There is no glaze on this pot. The colors were caused from the smoke and fumes created inside the foil while this was firing. The chemicals and organic materials inside the foil are what create the fumes and smoke.

I am speechless! This is absolutely beautiful work! Not going to lie, I had to re-read the "no glaze" line. The colors that were produced during the firing are outstanding!

amazing technique... really just flabbergasted.. I am officially impressed as hell.. pottery is something I would have to have LOVED to do but right hand will not allow... wonderful to have such a tactile medium..

Thank you! The tactile part of working on the wheel is the exact thing that made me hooked from the beginning. I'm sorry to hear your hand won't allow it. You could maybe give handbuilding a try.

Ill tell you something... If I had the cash I would offer serious money for this piece... some day I may scan my hand and submit as deviation... the type of dexterity required is out of my reach and probably beyond my talents... but this was inspired and inspiring... your reply reminds me to see more of your work (been so caught up in other things) so thanks... you are a gifted artisan...

Love the ferric chloride firing. If only it wasn't so toxic!

You got some great color out of this one! Do you remember if you added any salt or oxides to the saggar?

Beautiful- did you achieve this surface with burnishing only or is there a wax/sealer to add shine?
